Peer-to-peer (P2P) applications have shown their popularity on the Internet for file sharing. When a researcher proposes or enhances an algorithm for a peer to peer file sharing system, he/she needs to test and evaluate it so that it to be shown to be valid and verify. The ways used to achieve that are analytical solutions, simulating and experiment on real system. Simulating is the most popular way for testing peer to peer algorithms. On one hand, the cost of simulation is less than real experiments and on the other hands it has less complexity than using an analytical model. In this paper we focus on simulating a peer to peer file sharing network. We investigate parameters and features of network that must be simulated and how one can simulate them. We also introduce what simulator tool is proper for variety of P2P networks.
