Potholes refer to a type of surface distress that is induced by the presence of water in the asphalt soil structure and heavy traffic. Potholes can seriously compromise driver safety and road efficiency. Many researchers and transportation experts have tried to develop appropriate pothole maintenance system. Recently, vision-based pothole detection methods have been studied using video data in order to collect pothole information. Most algorithms use a thresholding method to extract a pothole region from the background, which is one of the most important steps in pothole detection algorithms. In this study, we introduce an advanced thresholding for pothole detection algorithms. The proposed method is designed based on our previous pothole detection algorithm. Our experimental results show that the proposed thresholding provides better pothole detection performance than our previous thresholding method.
